Being Your Own Best Cheerleader

I don’t know about you but, whew! There are days when I struggle. I struggle to work, to keep pressing towards the goals I set, and to value myself.

The one thing I have learned so far in my journey of life is that I am responsible for my own happiness. I cannot control people’s actions or other external things from happening, but I can certainly protect my own space and do the best that I can to be my number one supporter and greatest cheerleader.”

Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations, with true and meaningful reflection, are one way that I cheer myself on. Confidence has been something I’ve been building over time. But in a world that constantly tells us that we are not enough by selling to us that we could be more - more beautiful, more achievements, more money, more friends - it sometimes is an uphill battle to look at ourselves in the mirror and recognize and acknowledge the value and worth of ourselves. Positive affirmations remind us that we are enough and sometimes that’s the only little ingredient we need to keep moving forward.

Positive Attitude

“You too deserve a happy ending.”

A positive attitude is also key. Everyone talks about the importance of having a great mindset towards life and towards your work. That’s great, but it’s not the positive attitude I’m talking about. Whenever I encounter discouraging or depressing thoughts, I flip it to the exact opposite. For instance, I’ve always been afraid of commitment in relationships because I think of all the ways I would be disappointed or my heart would be broken. I do have, however, a wonderful spouse whom I adore, and it is difficult to exist in a relationship when you have such baggage. However, I am teaching myself to flip the negative and really go to the extreme end and say ‘why not?’. There’s no chance that I will bet against my own self and, thus, the best thing I can do is for every negative thought or scenario, imagine how it could be if I focused on the best part instead of the worst part.

To Try You Must!

There’s only so far positive affirmations and a positive attitude can take you. Ultimately, you have to roll up the sleeves and do the work. And that means that you have to show up for YOU every day. That means that no matter how hard, or easy, it gets, you have to be your own advocate. That means you show up, you ask questions, you learn, you fail, you try again and you keep at it until you get to where you want to be.

It's Ok To Pivot

Yes it is. The most important skill to learn is to know when the winds of change are blowing so that you’re proactive in making the changes rather than letting life force you to make the changes. If plan A doesn’t work, go to Plan B and so on and do forth. A little discovery I made on Excel sheets is that the alphabet doesn’t end at Z….it actually starts again as AA! So never think that your actions are limited. Rather, they are endless, but you have to be smart enough to know when to let go and when to turn over a new leaf. The best way to do this is through mentors - people who’ve walked the journey before, being aware of the landscape of the area you’re in so that when something changes, you are more likely to notice a change. And last but not least, trust your gut. It is your spiritual compass that works to preserve you. So listen to it, with the knowledge that you may not always be right!
